California unemployment benefits (UI): 2026 amounts & how to apply

California's Employment Development Department (EDD) runs Unemployment Insurance. The system is notoriously slow but the rules are clear once you cut through them.

Heads up: This guide is general information, not legal or financial advice. Rules change. Verify against the official source links before acting on anything that affects your money.

    Are you eligible?

You qualify if: you lost your job through no fault of your own (layoff, reduction in force, certain quits-with-cause), you earned at least $1,300 in your highest base-period quarter, and you're physically able and available to work.

Fired-for-cause cases are decided individually — file anyway and let EDD decide.

    How much will you get?

Weekly benefit amount = roughly 50% of your highest-earning base-period quarter divided by 26, capped at $450/week in 2026. That hasn't increased in over a decade — California has the lowest cap of any major state.

    Maximum claim: 26 weeks × $450 = $11,700 total per claim year.

    Applying through UI Online

Apply at edd.ca.gov/UI_Online. You'll need: SIN/SSN, driver's license, last employer's full legal name and address, gross earnings for the last week worked, and reason for separation.

First payment typically arrives 3–4 weeks after applying (1-week unpaid waiting period + ~2 weeks of processing). Set up direct deposit during the application — paper checks take an extra week.

    Common mistakes that delay payment

    1) Wrong employer name — use the legal name on your W-2, not the brand name. 2) Forgetting to certify every two weeks — payments freeze immediately. 3) Not registering with CalJOBS within 21 days — EDD requires this for most claimants. 4) Reporting any gig income inaccurately — even $1 of unreported earnings can trigger a fraud review.

    Frequently asked

What if my claim is denied?

File an appeal within 30 days. Roughly 40% of appeals succeed because the initial decision lacked documentation. Bring your offer letter, separation notice, and any emails with HR.

Can I work part-time while on UI?

Yes. You must report all earnings. Your weekly benefit is reduced by 75% of earnings over $25 — so part-time work that pays $200/week reduces your $450 benefit by about $131.

How does severance affect California UI?

California treats severance as wages, which can delay or reduce your weekly benefit. Lump-sum severance is typically allocated to a specific period — report it accurately on your first claim.
